A local’s take on Hawaiian nightlife

If you want to experience Hawaii’s nightlife beyond the tourist-heavy spots, try exploring beyond Waikiki’s main strip. Chinatown in Honolulu is a treasure trove of hidden bars where bartenders actually remember your name and stories flow as freely as the drinks.

One of my favorite spots is Bar 35 in Chinatown, small, unassuming, with a funky vibe and some of the best local brews on tap. And don’t overlook the hotels’ lounges for a chill drink with ocean views, like the Mai Tai Bar at the Royal Lahaina Resort on Maui. If you time it right, you'll catch a killer sunset to go along with your drink.

Got questions about hitting the bars and clubs in Hawaii? Here are some answers.

For the most part, you’ll be fine with island casual. Some upscale places in Waikiki might ask for no flip-flops or sleeveless shirts for guys, but generally it’s relaxed. Just think of keeping it neat and comfortable.
Absolutely! Bamboo at the Royal Hawaiian in Waikiki sometimes features live Hawaiian music. On Maui, places like Mulligan’s on the Blue in Wailea often have local bands playing. It’s a great way to soak up culture while having a drink.
Most places frequented by tourists and locals alike are pretty safe, especially in well-known neighborhoods like Waikiki and Lahaina. Just keep usual travel smarts in mind, watch your drinks and stick to well-lit areas.
Yes! Bars like Bar Leather Apron in Honolulu are famous for creative cocktails using local ingredients. You’ll find a lot of bars shaking up fresh fruit and tropical flavors, so don’t hesitate to ask for something local and refreshing.
Typically, no. Locals tend to go out more on weekends, so if you’re looking for a more relaxed vibe with less crowd, weekday nights are a great time to check out small bars.
