Bottleheads in Kailua is one of those places that's easy to settle into and stay longer than you planned. It's a cozy neighborhood wine bar and bottle shop with a solid selection of wines, craft beers, and small plates. The food is simple but well done—we shared the charcuterie board and grilled cheese, and both hit the spot. The menu leans toward snackable pūpū-style dishes that pair well with a glass of wine or a beer. ([Bottleheads][1]) What really makes it stand out is the atmosphere. The outdoor seating is relaxed, the staff is friendly, it's dog-friendly, and there's none of the pretentious vibe that some wine bars can have. It's the kind of place where conversation comes easily, whether you're catching up with friends or on a first date. I'd absolutely recommend it as a date spot if you're in Kailua. Great ambiance, good drinks, tasty food, and an easygoing neighborhood feel that makes you want to linger. If you're interested, they also host regular wine tastings and have an extensive retail wine selection if you find something you want to take home.
I don’t write reviews often, but I feel compelled to share this because I’ve come to Bottleheads many times and truly love their wine. Every glass I’ve had here has been excellent, and the grilled cheese is consistently great. That’s why this is so disappointing to say. The service has become a persistent issue. On multiple occasions, my friends and I have waited an unusually long time for our orders—even when the space was nearly empty. Most recently, we waited about 45 minutes for three glasses of wine and two grilled cheeses while every bit of the staff’s attention went to a nearby table of much younger guests. This isn’t the first time an order has been forgotten, and it’s hard not to notice that service quality seems to shift depending on who you’re with or how you’re perceived. I care about supporting small businesses, and I want this place to succeed. But consistent inattentiveness and selective hospitality overshadow what could otherwise be one of Kailua’s best spots. I hope the service improves, because the product deserves better.
