Trailhead to Switchbacks (15 minutes) • Start your hike at the paved section that leads to dirt and uneven paths. • Observe the unique dryland vegetation and lava rock formations along the way. • The first portion has gentle inclines and offers a great warm-up. 2. Switchbacks to the Tunnel (15 minutes) • Zigzag through the switchbacks as the trail steepens. • Pause to enjoy the views of the crater floor and the surrounding landscape. • Arrive at a short, dimly lit tunnel (bring a flashlight or use your phone light). 3. Tunnel to the Stairs (10 minutes) • Climb a steep set of 74 concrete steps leading to a spiral staircase. • This section is challenging but exciting! 4. Observation Bunker to the Summit (10 minutes) • At the top of the spiral staircase, pass through a historic observation bunker from WWII. • Ascend a final short staircase to the summit lookout.
