Paddle towards Moku Nui, a designated bird sanctuary, and explore the island’s hidden tide pools and venture to its backside if weather conditions permit. Encounter a vibrant array of wildlife, including sea turtles, Hawaiian monk seals, tropical fish, and sea birds.
Meet at the activity hub in Kailua where staff will greet you. Have the kayaks and bikes ready for you to head out on your adventure. A Lifeguard Certified tour guide will brief you on the ecological significance of the wildlife sanctuaries you’ll be visiting as well as help teach any skills for biking or kayaking.
From cruising effortlessly through Kailua Town to the Mokulua Island kayaking tour in Kailua Bay, get a deeper connection with the land and a better feel for why Kailua is known for being filled with active outdoor-loving people.
On this tour, head towards the breathtaking Mokulua Islands, also known as Kailua’s Twin Islands. These two charming islets off Oahu’s windward coast are a must-see. It’s a scenic 60-80 minute paddle from Kailua Beach Park over protected reefs and turquoise water to the main island, Moku Nui, the State Wildlife Sanctuary.
Weather permitting, hike around the island’s backside or venture to the queen’s bath and explore tide pools. Remember to stick to the trails and keep the island pristine by disposing of any litter properly. Moku Nui is not only a natural paradise but also a bird sanctuary, especially lively during the spring with adorable fluffy chicks.
Be respectful of the local wildlife – they’re cute and cuddly looking but rely on the island’s seclusion for their safety. Look, but don’t touch or disturb the wildlife. The Mokulua islands are also a prime spot to glimpse the endangered Hawaiian Monk Seal. The seals often rest on the sandy shore of Moku Nui after sometimes swimming hundreds of miles, navigating the deep ocean channels between the Hawaiian islands.
The entire adventure, from biking from the shop to paddling out to the Mokulua islands and exploring their wonders, takes about 5 hours. Get ready for an unforgettable journey filled with excitement, natural beauty, and new memories.
