Mahalo to Liam, Luis and the whole North Shore Surf Shop crew. They made us feel like Ohana not just customers. We purchased swag at both locations before heading back to Cali! Highly recommend this shop, super friendly & high quality clothing and gear.
Rented some stuff and they made it really easy to do. They have what you want to have a good time that's for sure.
My friend and I just rented some shortboards from Brett at North shore surf shop! He was super nice and helped us find the right boards. He gave us lots of good local knowledge and told us about some good spots we didn’t know about. You could tell he wanted to keep us safe out there and make sure we maximized our trip. Also just good board selection and crazy good location right in the middle of the north shore and next to smile shack. Thanks to Brett and the rest of the team! This place helped make our trip- having the right board was key!
We had a whole day planned and the North Shore with the first stop being the Waimea Falls to see the park and waterfall. Well unfortunately there was no water as it’s apparently drought season there. So we were super bummed. We drove up and down aimlessly after visiting the marketplace shops hoping something would speak to us. Well we ended up parking near sharks cove. We had no gear really and no plan. We happened to see the North Shore surf shop and walked over. I’m so glad we did! We met Martin and he took us under his wing. He fixed us up with great pricing on rentals. Explained everything in detail and told us where to go to have our best shot at seeing some turtles. Tropical Snorkeling is waaaay out of our comfort zone for this couple from North Alabama but we decided to do it after talking with Martin and who knows if we’ll ever get to come back to Hawaii. So we went all in and followed his instructions to a T. No sooner than we had got knee deep in the water with our gear on a massive sea turtle swims right in front of us!!!! It absolutely made our day. Martins energy and enthusiasm, knowledge, and guidance totally turned our day around and made it an unforgettable experience. I can’t say enough good about him and this shop. This is a must stop on your visit to north shore. Thank you so much Martin and North Shore Surf shop for this amazing experience.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ If you’ve ever watched North Shore (1987) and thought, “Man, I wish this movie could have a baby with fast times at ridgemont high,” — congratulations, you’ve found your spot. North Shore Surf Shop isn’t just a store; it’s like if Pipeline had a love child with a surf museum and raised it on good vibes and local wisdom. The moment you walk in, you can smell that glorious mix of wax, neoprene, and ambition. The staff radiate aloha energy but in that legit North Shore way — friendly, funny, and not trying to sell you every board in the rack. These guys and gals know their stuff. Whether you’re a traveling kook with more stoke than skill (like me) or a legit local charger who speaks fluent “reef break,” they treat you like family. I walked in thinking I was just gonna “browse” (famous last words) and walked out still probably looking like a kook still but at least I was ready to surf and get pounded by some locals. Board? Check. Rash guard? Check. A live monkey swinging too and fro from the ceiling? Double check. Their board selection is chef’s kiss — shiny enough for selfies, but broken-in enough that you won’t feel like Spicolli on day one trying to prove yourself at Pipeline (dont ever try this). If you’re in the market to buy, the lineup of boards looks like the your hot friend's mom's forbidden closet: everything from sleek shortboards to cruisy longboards that make you feel like you’re gliding through a montage scene with a tropical soundtrack. The vibe in the shop is pure aloha. Every time I stop by, there’s some surf legend or salty character swapping stories about the swell, the reef, or that one guy who tried to paddle out at Waimea on a Costco foamie. (He didn’t make it.) (And no, it was not me) Prices are fair, gear is top-notch, and the energy is the kind of local authenticity you can’t fake. You get the feeling they’d rather see you stoked and safe in the water than upsell you something you don’t need — and that’s rare these days. In summary: Whether you’re there to rent, buy, talk story, or just stand in the A/C pretending you surf more than you actually do, you’ll walk out smiling. 10/10
