Description
Begin with a drive through Hilo town, including a scenic route along the historic waterfront before arriving at the old fishing village of Kalapana. Your National Park Service certified guide will explain the volcanology, geology, and history of Kilauea Volcano, highlighting diverse lava flows, as well as native flora and fauna.
Hike across the lava flow to the new black sand beach. Visit the Star of the Sea Painted Church, a decommissioned church relocated twice to protect it from lava, now on the National Register of Historic Places.
Next, explore Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, visiting the Kilauea Visitor’s Center, the Kilauea Iki Crater Overlook, and Steaming Bluffs. Stop by Volcano House for views of Kilauea Caldera and hike to areas with cracks and sinkholes formed during the historic 2018 eruption.
