Description
Begin with hotel, airport, or cruise ship pick-up in the Hilo area. Travel in a luxury minibus to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park while learning about the environment and local agriculture.
In the park, stop at lava tubes, craters, steam vents, and sulfur banks, gaining insight into the park’s geology and history. Visit Volcano House, Visitor Center, and Kilauea overlooks for comprehensive views.
On the return trip, stop at Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Farm to sample nuts and tour the production facility. Pass through Hilo Bay and explore historic downtown Hilo with a one-hour lunch break, priced separately, near the bustling farmers market.
After lunch, visit Rainbow Falls, known for its visible rainbows caused by mist and sunlight, and the expansive 600-year-old Banyan tree nearby. Continue to explore local points of interest before strolling through Liliuokalani Park and Gardens, a 24-acre botanical garden with tropical plants and saltwater tide pools.
Next, visit Big Island Candies, a macadamia shortbread cookie factory, for tastings of their chocolate-dipped cookies and Kona or Kau coffee samples, along with a tour of the production process.
The final stop is Richardson Ocean Park, featuring black, green, and white sand beaches formed by ancient lava flows. Observe Hawaiian green sea turtles (Honu) in tide pools and natural reefs, along with local marine fish.
