Description
The experience begins with a drive from Hilo to the Puna Coast, where the 2018 eruption created a 40-foot wall of a’a lava closing the highway. You will hike the closed highway section, following the lava flow through a pine forest to the altered coastline and cliffs overlooking the new black sand beach.
Next, visit Isaac Hale Beach Park and drive along “Fissure 8,” the eruption site within the Leilani Estates subdivision. Lunch will be served picnic-style at the park, weather permitting.
After lunch, travel to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The tour starts at the Kilauea Iki Overlook, followed by a walk down the paved road to Keanakakoi. Here, you will observe damage from the 2018 eruption, including buckled roads and sinkholes. Enjoy elevated views of Kilauea Caldera and Halema’uma’u Crater, as well as the hiking trail into the Caldera.
During the 2-mile hike, watch for native birds such as the yellow ‘amakihi and red ‘apapane. Large ancient boulders mark previous rock slides and eruptions, accompanied by visitor inscriptions from explorers like Benjamin Boyd and John Webster. At the caldera floor, see evidence of the eruption’s impact, including a large rock slide and the 1,000-foot-deep Halema’uma’u Crater formed after the lava lake drained. The tour concludes with a return to the starting point.
