Description
Begin by traveling south into Kona coffee country with a visit to Bay View Farm, a 24-acre coffee farm on Mauna Loa’s slopes above Kealakekua Bay. Observe coffee beans growing and learn the farm’s coffee production process. Sample 100% Kona Coffee while overlooking Kealakekua Bay and the Captain Cook monument, the only British land in the US.
Continue through the South Kona and Ka’u Districts, enjoying views of lava flows and dry forest visible through your vehicle’s large windows. Stop briefly at Punalu’u Bake Shop, the southernmost bakery in America, known for its traditional Hawaiian sweetbreads and cookies available for purchase.
Arrive at Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, bordered by coconut palms. Walk the beach to spot green Hawaiian sea turtles feeding offshore or resting on the sand. Have a picnic-style lunch here, weather permitting.
Next, explore Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Visit key sites including the Kilauea Visitor Center, Volcano Art Center, and Sulphur Banks. Hike to Keanakako’i Crater and observe road cracks and sinkholes from the 2018 eruption. Continue to Mauna Ulu, a culturally significant park location, and stop at Volcano House, a historic lodge frequented by Mark Twain and Jack London since 1864.
