Description

Travel to Mauna Kea’s summit at 13,800 feet to experience a sunset followed by stargazing at 12,000 feet. Guides take DSLR photos of you during the sunset and under the stars, which are shared with you free of charge on your smartphone.

The tour begins with a meet-up at either the Target store in Kailua Kona or the Queens’ Marketplace in Waikoloa Resort. From there, you head to the Onizuka Visitor Information Center, where the guide shares insights about the Big Island. At the visitor center, warm-weather gear—including snow parkas, ski pants, and gloves—is provided. You will have time to acclimate, visit the gift shop, and enjoy a light meal of a BLT sandwich (vegetarian options available if requested in advance) while preparing for the summit.

Next, ascend in a 4x4 van and arrive about 60 minutes before sunset. Prepare for photo opportunities as guides take portraits with a DSLR camera, which are sent to you for free. After sunset, descend slightly to 12,000 feet for about an hour of stargazing. During this time, the guide explains celestial objects and photographs you with the stars. Please note that timing and locations may vary due to weather or other events.
