Sunset Cruises in Hawaii

Watching the sun dip below the horizon from a boat is something every visitor to Hawaii should try at least once. The colors on the water near Waikiki, or sailing out of Maalaea Harbor on Maui, can be totally mesmerizing. You’ll feel the warm trade winds on your face while sipping something cold and the coastline lights slowly pop on behind you.

Not all sunset cruises are created equal,some are lively party boats, others quieter, more laid-back sails. For a chill vibe, check out smaller catamarans that take you close to Diamond Head or along the Kona coast in Big Island’s Kailua-Kona area. If you’re visiting in winter months, keep your eyes peeled for humpback whales,they’re famous for cruising right alongside the boats.

Heads up: it can cool off quickly once the sun’s down, so bring an extra layer even if it’s blazing hot on land. Also, if you want a good spot to snap photos, board early so you can snag a seat on the side facing west. Just beware, late afternoon winds can sometimes make the waters a little choppy, so if you’re prone to seasickness, consider bringing some ginger candies or motion sickness meds.
