Event Details

Join us for a morning of hands-on learning while making valuable connections with the ʻāina and those around you. The work is challenging and the mud is deep but Integrated into your day will be meaningful Hawaiian values and lessons to make your time rich and memorable. The lo’i is nestled in the heart of Maunawili and is the headwaters of Kawainui Marsh, a natural wetland with all kinds of wildlife. You will have an encounter with nature in a beautiful and serene setting. We experience changes in weather regularly, so come prepared. We are looking forward to spending the day with you.


What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Parking is limited, carpooling is suggested. Street parking is available.

What should I bring to the event?

We An adventurous spirit, towel, old and comfortable clothes (shorts and t-shirt) old swimsuits are best to wear underneath your clothes to make rinse off easier, plastic bag for wet clothes, water bottle, hat, no shoes required in lo’i.

What is protocol?

We will start our time together with a short and simple opening protocol. You can either choose one representative from your group to open with an oli or a simple explanation of who you are and what your intentions are for the day. Hoʻokuaʻāina will respond with a welcoming oli.

Yes! We love seeing your photos. Please be sure to follow @hookuaaina on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter and tag us. Feel free to share and tag yourself or your organization in any of the photos and vids we share. Use #hookuaaina on all your posts so we can see them!
