This oasis is my secret. "Off the beaten path" is apt. It's located in Pahoa, 30 min. from Hilo. We'll follow a jungle & lava rock coastal route. Each way takes 20-30 minutes & is half a mile long.

Highlights

  • There's some elevation gain on the hike, offering amazing views of the coast.
  • The pool is like an infinity pool overlooking the cliffs.
  • The conditions are unusually calm.
  • Watch waves hit the cliffs, sending water into the air like a blowhole.
  • Explore the exotic ecosystem, e.g., crabs, fish, shells, rocks, other creatures.

Description

- You control how long we stay at the pool (typically 1 - 1.5 hours). - The pool has a deep (4-7 ft.) & shallow (1-4 ft.) area. - The views from the lava rock border are chef's kiss. The whole area is a miracle of nature. You'll feel close the wild ocean while being protected. - The crystal clear water is mineralized by the lava rock. - You'll be alone at the pool because it's unknown. - Your experience will be customized because it's private. I only recently published this experience on GetYourGuide. You can read more reviews at: https://www.tripadvisor.com/AttractionProductReview-g60583-d24018946-Short_Private_Hike_To_Secret_Jungle_Tide_Pool-Hilo_Island_of_Hawaii_Hawaii.html The coastal trail is composed of ‘A‘ā lava fields & hills, boulder fields, & jungle. A‘ā lava is very jagged. Some sections of the hike are flatter and easy to walk while others are more rugged with elevation gain. There are several sections where you must ascend & descend a small hill of stable lava rock. There's always a good place to put your feet or hands. It's not difficult enough to be called scrambling or climbing. I don't recommend this hike for children under 8 or anyone with a disability. If you bring children under 8, you'll have to be very hands-on with them. If you're in shape, you'll succeed, although many people who are out of shape have successfully completed the hike. The tide pool is formed from a basin of a'a lava rock. While it's full much of the time, sometimes it's 50% or 25% full. Almost always there's an area to submerge yourself. Rarely, the tide pool levels are too low or the conditions too rough for swimming. When this occurs, there's still plenty to explore at the pool. It rarely rains in this section of coastline, and there are hardly any bugs or mosquitoes. Some info about me: my name is Josh; I'm 32; I moved to Big Island in 2018; I graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a degree in philosophy; I live off-grid in an Ohia forest.

Important Information

  • - Hiking shoes are the most ideal option for the hike. Athletic shoes/hiking sandals are not ideal, as some people have reported that they have bad traction on lava rocks. However, many people still wear them and do fine. Other people wear them and wish they had gone with hiking shoes. See the 'description' section for more information about the terrain. - Wear 'water shoes' at the tide pool. I don't recommend flip flops. The ideal shoe is one that has sturdy soles and good traction on wet rocks, although the majority of people wear less than ideal shoes. - Bring a bathing suit and towel. Most people wear their bathing suit on the hike because there are no bathrooms at the pool. - Some people bring snorkeling gear or goggles. - Apply sunscreen before the hike so it doesn't get in the water. - Some people bring their own first aid kit because I do not provide one. - Feel free to bring food to the pool, although most people end up eating at a local restaurant afterwards.
