Pearl Harbor
Hawaii
It was December 7, 1941 when the Empire of Japan mustered forces, calling an attack on Pearl Harbour. Thousands of soldiers died that fateful day, which catapulted America to take part in World War II. To commemorate those who gave up their lives, museums and memorials were erected; allowing visitors to pay their respects to these brave men and learn more about the history of that day. Located on the island of Oahu, touring this place will give you one of the most memorable, poignant experiences one can have.
One of the must-sees is the floating memorial for the sunken Battleship USS Arizona and her crew. A Navy shuttle boat will conduct you to this white rectangular platform where you can then look down on the underwater ship. It sunk more than 60 years ago, yet oil still leaks from the wreckage. It is said that the USS Arizona continues to shed tears for the men who accompanied her to her watery grave.
To start your tour, go to the Visitor Center and wait for the shuttle. While there, take time to witness the various war memorabilia, historical documents, and pictures. To make the most of your trip, it is advisable that you include the audio tour and watch the short film which provides more details on the events that transpired that historic day. Once you get to the memorial itself, you will find a bell from the capsized battleship. There is also a shrine room exhibiting a marble wall where all the names of those who perished are carved.
Afterwards, visit the other historical memorials in the area, including the memorials for the Battleship Missouri and the USS Oklahoma. The Pacific Aviation Museum and the USS Bowfin Submarine Park and Museum are also worth a visit.
Overall, visiting Pearl Harbor will be one solemn, educational experience. It will be a tour that you will forever remember.
